Case Study | Oxford Street Christmas Lights Switch On

The Oxford Street Christmas Lights Switch On has been a key event for the New West End Company, who represent retailers in London's prestigious shopping district.

Wilde Ones have managed the production in the last 4 events, elevating the event to the UK’s premier Christmas lights switch-on.

With stars like The Saturdays, Cheryl Cole, Kylie Minogue, and Rita Ora performing, the event draws tens of thousands to London each year for a spectacular start to the festive season.

Due to space, time, and traffic restrictions, the stage had to be partially built on the road.

This required careful planning to minimise disruption to London’s transport network on one of the UK’s busiest streets.

By collaborating closely with Westminster City Council, LSTCC, and Sola Associates Traffic Management, a plan was developed to keep buses running efficiently for as long as possible during the build.

With limited working space and time constraints, the key to success was a strict schedule and strong management structure.

Assigning each element to a specific manager ensured total control of the build process and delivered a clear message to all suppliers on site.

Our experienced team, well-versed in urban events in central London, thrives in the high-pressure environment that these high-profile events create.

The event always calls for a unique and innovative look, with new technologies taking centre stage.

With support from our excellent lighting design team and suppliers, flexible LED mesh was introduced to Oxford Street for the first time.

The combination of LED mesh, LED screen backdrop, and captivating lighting design continued the year on year goal of raising of the bar.

With the button pressed and the crowds dispersing, the final phase began: the de-rig.

With traffic on hold until the street was clear, the race was on to remove all infrastructure as quickly as possible.

Re-opening London’s streets on time is as crucial as the switch-on itself. The team's track record on Oxford Street speaks for itself, with roads being reopened on time at every event managed.
